Class of '63 Recognized as PVM's First Golden Anniversary Class
The Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine passed another major milestone during the Purdue Veterinary Medicine 2013 Fall Conference for Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians as the Class of 1963 became the first PVM 50th Anniversary Class. A series of special activities marked the historic occasion, culminating in a special 50th Reunion Dinner, which was held Friday, September 13 at the two-story Spurgeon Club in the newly renovated and expanded Mackey Arena Complex. A total of 17 class members were on hand for the occasion, along with family, friends, PVM faculty and staff, and guests, including former faculty member Robert Lewis and Class of 1964 member Willis Parker. Also present were family members of deceased classmates, Laverne Hartzler-Moon and her two daughters Susan Homberg and Kim Mader; and Catherine Malayer and her two sons Jerry and Brad. Dr. Phillip Goebel’s daughter, Lynn, from California also attended for her father since he was not able to make the trip back to campus.
As part of the event, class members took turns sharing memories and stories related to their groundbreaking role as the first class to graduate from the College. Dr. Ed Willard, a long-time organizer of reunions over the years, brought along his daughter Rachel who is a 1996 PVM graduate. Dr. Willard offered a toast to the class and lifted champagne for a Golden Tribute to the Class. BaNaNa, a group from the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, performed a medley of 1950 and 1960 songs for the gathering.
Other celebrations included special recognition of the class at the Fall Conference Medicine Mixer reception the night before, an opportunity to tour Lynn Hall, and a special game ball presentation in honor of the class during the Purdue v. Notre Dame football game in Ross-Ade Stadium. At the Medicine Mixer, each class member present received a special 50th Reunion Medallion from the Purdue Alumni Association and Dr. John McKibben spoke for his classmates about college memories and the value of their Purdue veterinary school education. The significance of this historic reunion engenders renewed pride in the College as a new tradition of honoring each Golden Anniversary Class is begun.
