Food Animal Behavior Course

Intensive 2-week Course in Food Animal Behavior
Offered by the School of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University

The School of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University, offers an intensive course in food animal behavior for residents in veterinary behavior, and veterinarians in non-conforming training programs in animal behavior. The program consists of lectures and practical problem solving during farm visits. Topics include:

  • Normal pig behavior
  • Pig management and behavior
  • Behavior problems of pigs
  • Normal cattle behavior
  • Dairy management and behavior
  • Beef management and behavior
  • Behavior problems of cattle
  • Ventilation: systems design and evaluation
  • Clinical approach to food animal behavior problems
  • Farm animal welfare

There are approximately 2 farm visits each for swine, dairy and beef. Farm visits allow for hands-on participation in evaluation of housing and production systems and animal handling.

Instructors include faculty at Purdue University from the departments of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Animal Science, and Agricultural and Biological Engineering, as well as Dr. Gordon Jones from Fairoaks Dairy.

The course is offered in the fall. It is limited to four participants. Registration fee is $300.
