DOGS! and Cats Course:
Diagnosis and Treatment of Behavior Problems
for Veterinarians

A. Luescher, DVM, PhD, DACVB

Andrew Luescher, director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at Purdue University, has been treating companion animals with behavioral problems for over 19 years. Dr. Luescher sees behavioral cases in dogs, cats, parrots, horses, and food animals. His special research interests include compulsive disorders, canine aggression, and behavioral development. His treatment regimens use scientific principles of behavior and learning.

He joined the faculty of Veterinary Clinical Sciences and the School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University in August 1997 to establish the Animal Behavior Clinic and is an associate professor. Luescher earned his D.V.M. and MS.c. from the University of Zurich, Switzerland and a Ph.D. in animal behavior from the University of Guelph, Ontario. He is certified as an applied animal behaviorist by the Animal Behavior Society and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists.

He is a popular national and international speaker and teacher at academic and professional conferences on a variety of animal behavior topics.

J. Shaw, R.V.T.
Julie Shaw obtained an associate's degree in Veterinary Technology in 1983 from Purdue University and is currently working toward her bachelor's degree in veterinary technology. She worked in private practice for 16 years. She began training dogs in 1984 and began teaching organized classes in 1992. She owned and was the head trainer for the Academy for Obedient Paws, a dog training company utilizing clicker training methods. She had trained two service dogs for her child who has cerebral palsy.

Julie became the animal behavior technologist at the Purdue Animal Behavior Clinic in 1999. Her current responsibilities include organizing and assisting in teaching the five-day DOGS Behavior Modification course, teaching courses in behavior modification to veterinary and veterinary technician students, and instructing continuing education seminars for veterinary technicians, veterinarians, and trainers. She also assists Dr. Luescher during referral behavior consultations, teaches puppy classes, clicker training classes and does pet-selection counseling.

Julie is a charter member, past-president, co-newsletter editor and website editor for the Society of Veterinary Behavior Technicians. She is also chairs the organizing committee for the Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians.

Ms. Shaw is a popular national and international speaker on problem prevention, practical application of behavior modification techniques and other companion animal behavior related topics. She was the recipient of the North American Veterinary Conference 2006 Veterinary Technician Speaker of the Year Award and was named the 2007 NAVC Mara Memorial Lecturer of the year for her accomplishments and leadership in the veterinary technician profession.

Animal Behavior Clinic Staff

The current behavior clinic resident and other support staff will assist with lectures and practicums through out both courses.
