Your path to an academic or industrial career in Veterinary Medicine begins here with Purdue’s department of Basic Medical Sciences. Purdue’s department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) combines the personal attention of a small department, with a unique breadth of training. BMS offers graduate study leading toward a master’s degree and a doctoral degree. The department also offers a combined degree/dual degree option for students of the MD or DVM professional curricula. Because of its size, the BMS graduate program is ideal for students who wish to do their graduate work in a department that allows time and opportunity for individual attention and a close student-advisor mentoring relationship. Many BMS students combine teaching in the professional MD and DVM curricula with their dissertation research. This combination of research and teaching experience helps create a highly employable, unique graduate. BMS has active research programs in the following areas: signal transduction in development and oncogenesis, cell adhesion molecules in development and oncogenesis; musculoskeletal atrophy and countermeasures; ovarian follicle development; neural regeneration; implantable therapeutic or diagnostic devices, application of computers in veterinary and medical education.
