Abstract:
Hurricane
Mitch devastated the country of Honduras in 1998. Many homes were lost, people
were killed, and animals drowned in its destruction. I researched the effects
of Mitch on the dairy and meat production sectors and analyzed methods for
reducing the impact of future natural disasters on these industries. Dairy
and meat production accounts for 18% of the gross national product and 54%
of the damages caused by Mitch. Relief efforts are underway to rebuild production
systems and improve animal health. Damages that occurred include death, disease,
hunger, and premature slaughter. Other losses to production systems include
lack of pasture, installations, and transportation. Through interviews and
clinical practice, I assessed the damages incurred by producers in Honduras,
emphasizing disaster relief protocol and rehabilitation for livestock production
systems. I hope to provide solutions to the problem of disaster relief management
and improve the well-being of the animals currently as well as in future crises.
