Introduction:
Hurricane Mitch entered the department of Atlantida, a region situated on the north coast of Honduras on October 21, 1998. Mitch swept across the country destroying everything in his path and left the country's southern coast November 1. In its wake, Mitch left 7,002 people dead, 11,085 missing, 1,393,669 affected, 2,127,480 displaced, 11,762 wounded, and 15,000 living in communal housing (http://ns.sdnhon.org.hn/construir/la_tragedia.html). Mitch affected over a third of the population. More than 50% of the financial damages Mitch caused occurred in the agricultural and livestock production sectors. The Honduras Department of Reconstruction assesses the loss to be $3,794 million. The destruction includes loss of crops, pastures, and animals. I investigated the damages to dairy and meat production systems and the disaster relief provided for this sector through interviews, work, and assessment.
