Student Externship Program and Faculty Exchange with Kitasato University, Japan


The Japanese Student Externship Program and faculty exchange are made possible by an MOU that Purdue has signed with Kitasato University, Japan. In August 1995, five students and a mentor (Dr. Hashimoto) came to Purdue for clinical observations for two weeks. This year, six female and their mentor (Dr. Ogasawara) came to Purdue. They spent the past two weeks going through clinical observations in diagnostic imaging, Ophthalmology, small animal surgery, large animal surgery and large animal medicine. Kitasato University is interested in receiving one faculty member per year from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine to present lectures to the students, presentations to faculty and be involved in clinical rotations in Japan. Dr. Richardson, Head of Department of Clinical Sciences visited Japan in June 9-20, 1996 as part of the faculty exchange program.

Kitasato University has 7 schools including school of Veterinary Medicine and Animal sciences, which is located in Towada campus in Towada city, which is located 20 km west of Misawa airport and Misawa station of Japan Railway. Prof. Takashi YOSHIKAWA is the newly appointed Chairman of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which is organized into 19 laboratories, and has 45 members (42 veterinarians, 3 non-veterinarians)
