Lilly Lectureship Series on the Human-Animal Bond Wednesday, September 17

A gift from Eli Lilly and Company to the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University provides an annual speaker at the Fall Conference to broaden the veterinary profession’s understanding of the human-pet bond.  This year’s speaker is a renowned physician, who as a psychiatrist and professor, demonstrated increased survival in patients from the social support of companion animals.  Dr. Aaron Katcher has been a long-time advocate for educating veterinary and human health professionals about the health value from contact with companion animals.  This lecture is open to the public.

You know his hallmark book on Infectious Diseases of Dog and Cat, now come hear this internationally popular speaker talk about Gram-positive infections from the microflora inhabiting the skin and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Dr. Craig Greene is frequently recognized as an outstanding teacher and lecturer at major national continuing education meetings. This is not to be missed!

Small Animal Program

Two and one half days of concurrent sessions are devoted to those with small animal practice interests.  Disciplines represented include infectious disease, urology, internal medicine, surgery, dentistry, clinical pathology, practice management, radiology, transfusion medicine, and public health. In addition, a pre-conference workshop on biochemical data interpretation and two lunchtime interactive case discussions with Purdue professors are optionally offered.

Dr. Craig Greene, an emeritus professor at the University of Georgia, is board certified in internal medicine and neurology. He will discuss current aspects of several common bacterial and viral diseases.

Dr. Jeanne Barsanti, professor at the University of Georgia and boarded in internal medicine, will present diagnostic and treatment aspects of urogenital disease in the dog and cat. 

Dr. James Roush (Purdue ’83) is a boarded surgeon and professor at Kansas State University who will discuss management of hip dysplasia and evidence-based therapy of various joint diseases.

Dr. Mark Smith is double boarded in veterinary surgery and dentistry and a former professor from VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech who now practices in Gaithersburg, MD. He will discuss several aspects of oral surgery including tooth extractions and emergency concerns.

Dr. Ed and Toni Eames are a husband and wife team who as adjunct professors of sociology at California State University frequently write and speak about working with disabled clients and their assistance dogs to service professionals including veterinarians. They will demonstrate the challenges and share their vast experience with veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Dr. Dennis DeNicola (Purdue ’78), a former Purdue professor in clinical pathology, currently is Chief Educator at IDEXX. He will present various topics to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, as well as participate in the pre-conference clinical pathology workshop.

Dr. Catharine Scott-Moncrieff, PUSVM professor in internal medicine and Danielle Buchanan, RVT, PUSVM small animal medicine technologist, will present together the basic steps in setting up a blood transfusion program applicable for practicing veterinarians and technicians.

Dr. John Christian is a clinical pathologist at PUSVM who will repeat his popular “Meet the Professor” session on clinical chemistry case interpretations from last year as well as participate in the pre-conference clinical pathology workshop.

Dr. Hock Gan Heng is a recent addition to the diagnostic imaging service at PUSVM who will repeat his popular “Meet the Professor” session on radiographic case interpretations from last year.

Food Animal Program

A one-day program will be available to those with food animal practice interests.  Disciplines represented include infectious disease, parasitology, and swine reproduction.

Dr. Vladimir Celer is a virologist at the veterinary school in Brno, Czech Republic, with an international reputation in swine diseases who will present the Lew Runnels Lecture on current important infections.

Dr. Mark Wilson, a reproductive physiologist associated with Ralco Nutrition, Inc., will focus on interactions of nutrition upon reproductive success in the sow and boar.

Dr. Joe Campbell (Purdue ‘76) affiliated with Boehringer-Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. will present disease and vaccination aspects of bovine viral diarrhea.

Dr. Bret Marsh (Purdue ‘84) is the Indiana state veterinarian who will provide an update on activities by the Board of Animal Health.

Dr. Leon Thacker (Purdue ’65), as recently retired director of ADDL, will give the annual update of activities at ADDL.

Dr. Gil Myers, a livestock parasitologist who is a consultant for Intervet, Inc., will speak about parasite control and prevention in small ruminants.

Equine Program

A half-day program will be available to those with equine practice interests.  The main focus is the respiratory tract in health and disease. A lecture portion is open to all as part of the general program. An optional 2 hour workshop will be offered to participants to permit hands-on practice of endoscopic techniques.

Dr. Laurent Couetil and Dr. Jan Hawkins, PUSVM

will present introductory lectures about endoscopy of the upper and lower respiratory tract. Both will instruct workshop participants to learn about equipment used and sampling techniques employed by endoscopy.

Veterinary Technician Program

A one day program with concurrent tracks having a variety of topics of interest to veterinary technicians will be available.   Disciplines represented include toxicology, clinical pathology, feline viral diseases, practice management, cardiology and anesthesiology research, and animal behavior.
