The Practitioner Sabbatical Program

Interested in picking up a new technique not covered while you were in school, or brushing up on the latest technology of an area you are not as familiar with as you would like to be? You should consider a Practitioner Sabbatical Program at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. The purpose of this program is to help practitioners (DVMs, or equivalent degree holders, who have been practicing for at least three years) continue to develop their medical knowledge and technique base.

The program offers you the facilities of the School to use as you work one-on-one with our faculty and staff. You pick an area(s) of interest, contact a faculty member to be your mentor (or we'll help you find someone), and then you and your mentor put together an agenda that will meet your educational goals. Setting a convenient schedule is also up to you and your mentor so you can work the sabbatical around your practice schedule. Most practitioners have found it easiest to come one day a week or every other week.

The fee is minimal, $800 for 5 days (divide proportionally for other lengths of time) of intensive experience with a faculty mentor and SVM's staff devoting their time and expertise to your individualized, program. Financial assistance is available through the Bruce Sharp Memorial Endowment Fund to assist with the cost of fees, travel, lodging, food, etc. Application to the Practitioner Sabbatical Program must be submitted at least one month prior to your proposed starting date.

We have had favorable responses from those practitioners who have participated in the Practitioner Sabbatical Program. Here are a few of the practitioners' comments:

"Continue the sabbatical program! -- It is a beneficial program for all parties concerned."

"My mentor was most helpful in his discussions with me. I enjoyed thoroughly his open, easy-going, one-on-one teachings."

"The most valuable part of my experience was the helpful contacts with the staff who went out of their way to be sure I was getting useful information and was aware of daily events."

"I found I was able to communicate with the students as to what daily, actual problems practices regularly face. They were eager for this input."

"The dollar-spent, education-received value and the quality of experience is far above anything else available."
