VETERINARY CLINICAL PATHOLOGY RESIDENT/MS GRADUATE STUDENT

The Department of Comparative Pathobiology, School of Veterinary Medicine, at Purdue University is offering a three-year combined residency/MS graduate training program in Clinical Pathology. This program offers: 1) broad experience in the areas of hematology, clinical chemistry, and diagnostic cytology, and 2) training that will enable the resident to sit for board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists upon completion of the program. Responsibilities include graduate course work in pathology and other disciplines which will be selected by the student and his/her advisory committee, participation in the clinical pathology service rotation, and teaching professional veterinary students. The starting stipend for this position is currently $30,000 per year with benefits and a tuition waiver. The tentative start date is July 12, 2010. This individual joins two other clinical pathology trainees and five clinical pathologists.
Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree. Individuals who desire PhD training upon completion of the program are especially encouraged to apply. Specific interests of the clinical pathology faculty include diagnostic cytology/surgical pathology, inflammation, immunocytochemistry, hematopoietic neoplasia, and clinical research. General areas of departmental research interests include infectious diseases, immunology, oncology, toxicologic and environmental pathology, and epidemiology.

GRADUATE (PhD) STUDY IN EPIDEMIOLOGY SHELTER MEDICINE PROGRAM

The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Comparative Pathobiology, is now seeking applications for a funded PhD graduate position in epidemiology within the new Shelter Medicine Program at Purdue University. The collaborating animal shelters in Chicago and Indianapolis are outstanding facilities in major metropolitan areas and offer numerous opportunities for applicable graduate study research.
The chosen applicant will be trained in epidemiology and other disciplines relevant to their research topic leading to the PhD degree. The research required for the dissertations will focus on population problems as they pertain to the typical shelter environment, preventative shelter medicine, infectious disease epidemiology, understanding the causes of pet overpopulation and developing strategies to overcome the problem, or other issues impacting animal welfare. The graduate student will be expected to take formal courses in epidemiology, population-based medicine, clinical trials training, infectious disease epidemiology, microcomputers, statistics, and biomedical ethics. In addition to the epidemiology and public health courses offered at Purdue University, courses in epidemiology, public health and biostatistics are available in summer programs offered by the schools of public health at other

The Department of Comparative Pathobiology, Purdue University, School of Veterinary Medicine is offering a three-year combined residency/MS graduate training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine. This program offers broad experience in laboratory animal medicine through training at four different institutions (Purdue University, Indiana University School of Medicine, Eli Lilly and Company, and Harlan), each with a unique staff and mission. Upon completion of the program, residents are eligible for board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Residents will take part in didactic training, directed projects, and hands-on experience with all of the principal laboratory animal species. The starting stipend for this position is based on previous experience and is consistent with NIH guidelines for Postdoctoral Training. The start date is negotiable.

A Ph.D. student position is available for participation
in research on molecular and immunological aspects
of turkey coronavirus or infectious bursal disease
virus in the Department of Comparative Pathobiology,
Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine.
The research focuses are molecular and immunological
characterization of virus and viral proteins, molecular
mechanisms of viral infections, development of recombinant
or DNA vaccines, and mechanisms of DNA vaccination.
Graduate students are expected to take courses in
biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and virology.
