We are currently not accepting any more dogs into our studies. Please refer back to this page for any changes.
We would like to share the following information with all dog owners.
One of the perks of the CPR program is that, if the
dog meets the qualifications to be in one of the
studies, The Center pays for either 30% or all the medical costs of
surgery, x-rays, medicine, etc. depending on the severity of the injury.
Often these expenses can be $2500.
Many times a veterinarian who is unaware of our programs
will recommend euthanasia and we want to get the
word out that owners have an alternative. Some Vets
will recommend surgery, however, we can offer novel
treatments in addition to surgery which often will do
more for the recovery of your dog. We work in
partnership with owners to help return function to
paralyzed animals as well as to advance our
understanding of spinal cord injuries.
Hopefully, this information is helpful to many owners.
Please feel free to share it with your friends, fellow dog
owners, and veterinarian.
Refer to Entry
Criteria for Clinical Dog Studies to determine whether your paralyzed
pet is a candidate for our studies.
The Center for Paralysis Research (CPR) is a unit of
the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine that works with spinal cord
injury cases. We have been researching this area for 15 years - and have
had very astounding results. Ten years ago - if a dog were
paralyzed, it was often recommended that the dog be
put to sleep - there was no hope for recovery. Now
we can say there is! One of the first studies,
published in scientific journals in 1993, showed that
some dogs CAN walk again after being completely
paralyzed. The dogs that were studied were neurologically "complete"
paraplegic due to traumatic disc herniations and
were referred to Purdue by their local veterinarians.
All dogs in studies used dogcarts by K-9 Cart Company.
