COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
Call for Proposals
Major Research Equipment
2012
The College of Veterinary Medicine invites proposals for major research equipment (>$10,000) that benefits more than one laboratory. Priority will be given to requests for multi-user equipment items that may be utilized by the greatest number of active research programs within the college and that will be placed in one of the common equipment rooms. Requests can come from an individual or a group of collaborators, but in all cases, the potential for usefulness to PVM must be justified along with the significance to the research focus area. Deadline for proposal submission is 5:00 PM, Monday, December 17, 2012.
$125,000 of internal PVM competitive funds have been designated to support major equipment needs for research in one of the four research focus areas of the PVM. Items purchased will be regarded as a college-wide resource. This will insure the continual usage of this equipment should the primary user leave PVM or change research direction. Requests may be for the purchase of major equipment to develop new technologies or to replace outdated equipment. (Funding request must include the cost of at least one additional year maintenance/service contract beyond the initial year, if appropriate).
Proposals will be selected for funding following review by the Research Advisory Board on or before January 31, 2013.
The PI MUST HAVE an approved Hatch or Animal Health project in place or must have notification from the USDA that a new project has been approved, because the majority of available funds are USDA formula funds. Funds must be spent within one year following notification of the award.
The proposals are due by 5:00 PM, December 17, 2012, to the Office of Research Programs, Room 1177H, Lynn Hall. Please provide 1 Electronic submission and 1 signed, unbound hard copy (original) of the proposal to Sue Wood (suewood@purdue.edu). Decisional review will be completed by the Research Advisory Board on or before January 31, 2013. Notification of award will be made without delay.

MAJOR RESEARCH EQUIPMENT PROPOSALS
Each major equipment proposal must contain all information requested in items 1 through 8 below. The proposal is limited to 6 double-spaced pages (excluding the title and signature pages) with one-inch margins and 12 pt. font.
1. Title page identifying the program area(s) for which the equipment is primarily intended and containing the signature of the primary user and department head of the primary user.
2. Major equipment item(s) requested (Total request minimum of $10,000)
3. Estimated cost per item. Attach a quote if available.
4. Anticipated primary and secondary users.
5. Justification for purchase:
Usefulness to PVM and significance to research program area, to include the following:
a) title and specific aims of research projects of the identified users which require the equipment.
b) funding for projects of primary and secondary users (both internal and external).
c) potential for expanded use.
d) nearest available similar equipment (within the college, on campus, etc.) - if the equipment is available elsewhere in the College or the University, why is a new purchase necessary?
6. Has the equipment been requested previously? Has any attempt been made to acquire the equipment through a grant, from a foundation or from the manufacturer? If not, could such an attempt be made now? Any matching funds? If yes, provide letters from the source(s) of the matching funds (e.g., from heads of department).
7. Are there special requirements for housing? Where might the equipment be housed?
8. How would the investigators propose that the equipment be maintained including cost of a service/maintenance contract, if appropriate. (e.g., annual calibration, periodic service needs, who would be responsible for the general maintenance of the equipment in the PVM)?
The responses to Items 7 and 8 should be discussed and agreed to by the department head of the primary user.
In the case of multi-item requests, the primary user should prioritize the items of equipment being requested.
The PI must have an Approved Hatch or Animal Health Project before receiving funds.
