The Student
Chapter of the Association of Equine Practitioners is a very active
club at the vet school! In addition to holding monthly meetings on
various topics, we also do several wet labs during the year. For
example, in 2006 we had a wet lab at the Purdue horse farm in which
freshmen were able to practice venipuncture, sophomores practiced passing
a nasogastric tube, and juniors performed abdominocentesis. We will also
be hosting a dentistry short course in which we will spend a
weekend learning and practicing dental techniques. We also hope to do a
lab on diagnosing lameness, including practicing joint blocks on cadaver
legs. We also took a trip to Indiana Downs racetrack this year!
Equine club also
takes care of the horses out at Purdue horse farm, so there is ample
opportunity to go out and groom or help with semiannual vaccinations
and deworming. Some topics that we are hoping to have meetings about
include care of the neglected/abused horse, equine reproduction,
developments in the diagnosis and treatment of EPM, what it is like the
first year out of vet school, and many other topics. There are lots of
opportunities for both “horsey” people, and those that have never touched
one in their life!
