Junior Delegate |
The SCAVMA chapters at each veterinary school are a part of a larger national organization called SAVMA (the Student American Veterinary Medical Association). Each year there are two national meetings held in which delegates from Purdue are joined by delegates from all other veterinary schools and issues important to our careers and education are addressed in the Student AVMA House of Delegates. The first meeting, which is SAVMA Symposium, is geared toward students and completely student coordinated with wonderful wet-labs and lectures, as well as school competitions and social events. It is hosted by a different veterinary school each year. It was held at Auburn and Tuskegee Universities in Alabama in March of 2008. The dates for the next two are included below. The AVMA works closely with SAVMA during two intense days of House of Delegates meetings to make students aware of current issues in veterinary medicine and we are then entrusted to take this information back to our students. The second meeting is at the annual AVMA Convention, usually held at the end of July. This convention also changes locations from year to year. New Orleans, LA was the site of the 2008 AVMA Convention. House of Delegates meetings held here are similar to those for Symposium. The Convention is comprised of lectures and wet-labs, as well as social events for students and doctors. Please see below for dates and locations of future AVMA Convention. The SAVMA House of Delegates follows the guidelines set forth in the AVMA and SAVMA Constitution and By-laws. The House discusses many issues of primary concern to the AVMA and our profession, and votes on issues such as sites for SAVMA Symposium from year to year and specifics for college and individual student membership in SAVMA. Purdue SAVMA Delegates attend both of these annual meetings to represent our veterinary school student body, and travel and lodging costs are completely covered! Delegates also attend Purdue SCAVMA executive board meetings to stay up to date on issues and events at Purdue. These positions are a fabulous way to network with students and veterinarians working within the AVMA and SAVMA. Being a delegate boosters leadership and communication skills, and also increases confidence to go out and become an influential and successful member of the veterinary profession. The delegate immerse themselves in the bigger picture—the issues affecting societal view of our profession and issues important to the welfare of us as professionals and the welfare of the animals we strive to care for. For more information on our role in SCAVMA or if you are interested in being a delegate for Purdue, please contact Chris Hall (Senior Delegate) or Josh Warren (Junior Delegate).
