Indiana's only veterinary medical school and one of only 27 in the nation that grants the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree is located at Purdue's main campus. It features two programs: a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree and a Veterinary Technology degree. If you wish to find out more about the Veterinary Technology program, click on Veterinary Technology.

Two to three years of pre-professional education are required before the school will consider a student for the professional D.V.M. program.

Students can satisfy pre-professional requirements in one of several Purdue programs; most enroll in either the School of Agriculture or Science. After completing the required courses, students can apply to our professional program.

Facilities and staff availability limit entering class sizes. Admission is competitive and not assured by completion of the pre-professional requirements. Academic achievement, aptitude, character, maturity, and career motivation are considered in final selections. Application deadline is OCTOBER 1.

Pre-professional course work includes:

Biology (including genetics)
Biochemistry
Chemistry, general and organic
English composition
Humanities electives
Mathematics, calculus and statistics
Physics
Speech

Required standardized test:
Graduate Record Exam (GRE) General Test

VETERINARY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

An graduating admission program is available to those high school seniors who rank in the top 10% of their class and whose SAT scores total 1300 or greater or whose ACT composite score is 28 or greater. If you are admitted and enroll at Purdue in either animal sciences, biochemistry or biological sciences degree programs, you may be eligible. Your commitment is to complete your undergraduate program including the pre-professional requirements with a stipulated grade point average and receive your Bachelor's degree to maintain your guaranteed admission into the D.V.M. program. If you would like more information about this program, contact the Student Services / admissions office.

VETERINARY MEDICAL SCHOOL ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS (VMSAR)

If you are interested in comparing veterinary schools, a handy reference source is a book entitled Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements in the U. S. and Canada (VMSAR). VMSAR summarizes information about required courses, class sizes, and number of positions for out-of-state residents, costs to attend an evaluation criteria and time lines for the admissions process. This book can be purchased for a reasonable price through the Purdue University Press. To order, call toll free 1-800-933-9637 or print a order form in: Adobe Acrobat PDF.pdf_sm.gif - 908 Bytes

SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE OPEN HOUSE

Each year the Veterinary Medical and Veterinary Technology students host an annual open house. This occurs on a Saturday during the month of April. This is the only time that the facility is open to the public for viewing. In addition there are many exhibits, class displays and demonstrations to view. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2002 is the date of our next open house, come join us!

VETERINARY MEDICAL COLLEGES APPLICATION SERVICE (VMCAS)

If you are at the point where you have completed all your required courses, taken the GRE, and gained the necessary experience to research this career goal, you may be ready to begin the application process. The Veterinary Medical Colleges Application Service (VMCAS) is the easiest and most efficient manner in which to apply to the various veterinary schools. Twenty-four of the 27 veterinary schools participate in this service as well as two Canadian Schools.

As an applicant, you need only fill out one application form indicating the schools to which you wish to apply. VMCAS will see to it that your application and all supporting materials reach the schools that you have indicated. If you would like to request an application packet, you may do so now by clicking on VMCAS.

RESIDENCY

Some students are interested in becoming residents of the state in which they attend veterinary school. In the State of Indiana, each college/institution is allowed to set policy for residency classification. Purdue policy states that if you move to Indiana, it must be for some other purpose than educational reasons. If you would like further information, please contact us and we will be happy to send you the Purdue residency brochure.

FINANCIAL AID

Financial aid is available to students in the professional D.V.M. program. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the required form for Purdue. The Division of Financial Aid determines aid eligibility. The unique costs associated with our professional program are recognized and will be reflected in the calculations for aid eligibility. Questions on this topic should be directed to the Division of Financial Aid.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Graduate programs are offered through the three academic departments of our school: Basic Medical Sciences, Veterinary Clinical Sciences and Veterinary Pathobiology. For further information on these opportunities, please visit the appropriate web site.

EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

As a part of the fourth year curriculum, students are required to participate in an externship (off campus) experience. Many students and prospective employers have found this to be an excellent opportunity to network. Many students receive an offer of employment as a direct result of their externship experience. If you would like for your practice/hospital or agency to become an externship site, we invite you to go "on line" to post your opportunity.

POSTING AN EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Time is a commodity that is in short supply for both employers looking to hire and new graduates seeking to be employed. As an employer, you can now go "on-line" to post your employment opportunity with us for either veterinarian or veterinary technologist openings. You may also wish to post your employment opportunity through the national placement service offered by the AVMA. You can read an article on recruiting tips and another on job placement at PUSVM written by Ms. Denise Ottinger, Director, Student Services, School of Veterinary Medicine.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Career opportunities in the field of veterinary medicine are diverse. Further information is available through the national AAVMC and AVMA websites.
