The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences is now accepting applications for the Maddie’s Post-DVM Fellowship.  The successful candidate will have a passion for shelter medicine and this position would be ideal for a veterinarian with at least 2 years post-doctoral experience who is looking for training to facilitate a career in shelter medicine. This is a 12-month position based at the state-of-the-art PAWS Chicago Lurie Family Spay/Neuter Clinic facilities. The program will provide a DVM graduate with advanced clinical training in shelter medicine, specifically in areas of population medicine, infectious disease, animal welfare, preventative medicine and high volume high quality spay/neuter. The Maddie’s post-DVM Fellow will also attend a major national shelter medicine meeting, such as NAVC or Midwest Veterinary Conference and will also participate in a comprehensive shelter assessment trip, working with other shelter medicine trainees. In addition, the Fellowship includes one month of intensive spay/neuter experience to develop shelter surgery skills. During the fellowship, an independent shelter-based research project will also be undertaken with support from a faculty mentor from the Purdue University Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. The research project will culminate in a paper submitted to a peer-reviewed journal at the conclusion of the fellowship and support is available for the Fellow to present the work at a national veterinary meeting. A 45-minute seminar at the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine on the chosen topic of research is required for completion of the 12 month fellowship.

Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree and be currently licensed to practice in Illinois or eligible to apply for an Illinois license. Preference will be given to veterinarians with at least 2 years post-doctoral experience. A certificate will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the program.  Benefits include 22 days of vacation, health insurance, and professional liability insurance provided by Purdue University.
