Comparative Anesthesiology-Pain Management Graduate Program

Mission:The mission of the Comparative Anesthesiology and Pain management Graduate Program is to provide quality graduate education in Veterinary Medicine. The unique focus of our program is to promote high quality, leading edge research and to train scholars to improve the health and well being of animals and people.

The goals of our program are to train graduate students to be independent basic, applied and/or clinical researchers and to achieve successful careers in academia, pharmaceutical industry, veterinary private practices, or government service.

 

Description of the program:Comparative anesthesiology and pain management is a multidisciplinary program for students interested in basic, clinical and comparative research mechanisms of pharmacology, anesthesiology and pain management in animals and human health.  The program is designed to provide students an understanding of basic physiology, clinical anesthesiology, clinical pharmacology of various anesthetics, anesthetic equipment, cardiorespiratory monitors, physiology and pathology animal and human pain, and analgesic agents for treating or alleviating animal and human pain and suffering.

 

Qualifications: The candidate must have a 4-year bachelor degree or a DVM degree or its equivalent and must meet the graduate student admission standard set by the graduate school at Purdue University.

 

Scholarship:Graduate stipend is available for qualified individual.

 

Potential projects:

  • Various injectable anesthetic combinations in dogs and cats
  • Lidocaine patch efficacy and toxicity in dogs and cats
  • Buprenorphine efficacy and toxicity in cats
  • Body temperature maintenance devices
  • Dental analgesia
  • Regional analgesia
  • Alpha-2 and alpha-1 receptors distribution in the spinal cord of domestic animals
  • Reptile sensitivities to alpha1 and alpha-2 agonist sedatives
  • Anesthesia and pain management in laboratory rodents
  • Potential pre-products of human pain management
