The Purdue University Veterinary Technology Program is a competitive admissions program.

Associate of Science Degree (A.S.) program

Starts in June and constitutes the core clinical portion of the curriculum. The A.S. Degree is required for licensing.

A 3-year A.S. degree option exists for high school students or college students with minimum college credits. It consists of 1 year of general education courses prior to the beginning of the A.S. degree clinical curriculum the following summer. This option is recommended for high school students and applicants who only want the A.S. degree but also want college credits that could apply to other degree options.

Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.) program

Includes the Associate Degree program curriculum and recommended for high school seniors and high school graduates without college credit. Freshman students admitted to this program begin in August.

4 semesters of science (chemistry and biology) for AS degree; 6 semesters for BS degree

THE COMPETITIVE ADMISSION PROCESS

Admission is a competitive admissions process based on the following criteria:

Academic ability (overall academic performance with emphasis on math and science grades, SAT/ACT scores, writing skills)

Experience (animal care, veterinary health care exposure, general work experience)

Evidence of self-motivation, self-determination, veteirnary technology career awareness, leadership, and awareness of the VT Program

Each VT Class contains 30 students. There is one class per year.

In December, completed applications (receipt of Application for Admission and Experience Report) submitted by the deadlines listed above are reviewed by the Veterinary Technology Committee. Pre-requisite course requirements for admission to the Veterinary Technology program are verified, and each candidate's Application for Admission and Experience Report is evaluated for academic performance, standardized testing scores, experience working in a veterinary health care environment, animal experiences, and understanding and exposure to the veterinary technology career.

60-65 qualified applicants from the pool of completed applications are invited to an interview during January. Faculty and staff of the Veterinary Technology Committee conduct a 20 minute interview. Attendance at the interview is mandatory to be considered for admission.

After all the interviews are completed, the Veterinary Technology Committee will review all interviewed candidate application portfolios (which must include the three recommendations). The class will be selected and offers of admission will be sent from the Office of Admission in mid-February.

You must return your confirmation of acceptance of the Offer of Admission with the appropriate deposit by the stated deadline. Failure to do so will result in the Offer being rescinded and offered to an applicant on the alternate list.

The Offer of Admission can be rescinded if the student fails to maintain an acceptable level of academic performance prior to beginning classes in the Veterinary Technology Program or if the student is unable to meet the safety requirements for the Technical Standards even with compensatory equipment.
