Dean’s Diary

Purdue veterinary alumni logging on to the new Purdue online social network called Boilersphere will see a welcome from one of the newest on-line users, me. To join the network, just go to www.purdue.edu/boilersphere and follow the instructions.  Once you are logged-on, look for the new “Dean’s Dialogue” feature in the SVM group.

The key to the growth of Boilersphere is participation, and signing-up is a lot easier than passing those histology and parasitology tests, so I know you can do it.  Just take a few minutes today and become a member.  It’s free and fun and will get you plugged-in to the growing “Boilersphere.”

Sign-on today and check out the new virtual veterinary reality. And then stay tuned as the “Dialogue” continues!

Cold temperatures don't stop the fun at Open House

Cool and wet weather could not keep away the crowds from the 45th annual School of Veterinary Medicine Open House.  With leadership from members of the Class of 2009, a team of student volunteers successfully organized the day-long event on April 12th.  In addition to tours and displays, the Open House featured demonstrations ranging from a live closed-circuit telecast of a spay surgery and to a presentation about the work of search and rescue dogs.  Special congratulations to the student co-chairs of the event, Maria Littles and Erin Wendt.

Mark your calendar now for the 2009 Open House, which will be held Saturday, April 18th!

Purdue SVM in the News

Dr. Suresh Mittal, professor of molecular virology, has been in the news in recent weeks. His lab is developing a new vaccine against highly pathogenic bird flu with the Centers of Disease Control. The new vaccine. Unlike traditional vaccines, Dr. Mittal's version could be produced quickly and stored for long periods of time.
