COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is the first of 2 courses involving basic principles of imaging that are necessary for the understanding and performance of diagnostic imaging procedures in a veterinary hospital. This course provides an introduction to X-ray generation, image formation, exposure factors, scatter radiation, grids, film, screens, safety, basic terminology, positioning, darkroom techniques, and artifact identification.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • to introduce the student to the basics of diagnostic imaging
  • to present the fundamental techniques used in setting up, taking, and developing radiographs
  • to introduce concepts of safe use of radiographic equipment
  • to present key points on assessment of radiographic technique
  • to serve as a prerequisite course for the Diagnostic Imaging clinical mentorships

METHOD OF DELIVERY

Primarily web-based exercises, textbook, and examinations (on-line or paper).
The exercises will be completed on line and submitted to the instructor.
Supplemental material will be offered on line as content (in addition to the textbook)

This course provides an introduction to advanced positioning techniques for the small animal, large animal techniques, contrast techniques, technique charts, basic ultrasound, diagnostic imaging in exotic animals, and diagnostic imaging for veterinary dentistry.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • to introduce the student to the more advanced concepts of diagnostic imaging
  • to present the techniques used in large animal, exotics, and special procedures
  • to present how to develop a radiographic technique chart
  • to serve as a prerequisite course for the Diagnostic Imaging clinical mentorships

METHOD OF DELIVERY

Primarily web-based exercises, textbook, and examinations (on-line or paper).

Students are expected to achieve a level of understanding in commonly used clinical pathology terminology so that they will be able to communicate effectively with the veterinarian regarding laboratory findings.

To present fundamental techniques used in performing various laboratory tests.

CPB 225 will place an emphasis on the basic information needed to accurately identify parasites commonly encountered in veterinary medicine. Emphasis will also be placed on life cycles and the zoonotic aspects of the parasites covered.

Students are expected to achieve a level of understanding of parasitology so that they will be able to make accurate identifications and to communicate effectively with the veterinarian.

Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to:

· Correctly identify parasite diagnostic stages described in this course.

· Describe the life cycles, transmission, basic pathogenesis, zoonotic aspects, adult parasite predilection site, clinical manifestations and control methods for parasites covered in this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to enable the veterinary technician to satisfactorily characterize and identify microorganisms that may be encountered in a veterinary practice situation. This course will introduce microorganisms commonly encountered in veterinary medicine and gives an overview of the characteristics and diseases caused by each. Also included in this course is material covering the many different laboratory techniques that are used in microbiology including Gram stains, culture and sensitivities, culture plate and tube inoculations, and a wide variety of biochemical tests used in the identification process of microorganisms.

Students are expected to achieve a level of understanding of veterinary microbiology so that they will be able to communicate effectively with the veterinarian.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon the completion of this course, the students will be able to:
-Identify the common microorganisms seen in veterinary medicine and describe characteristics of each and the diseases that they cause.
-Explain the various biochemical tests used to aid in the identification of microorganisms, including why each test is run, how to perform each test, and how to interpret the results.
-Perform basic hands-on techniques used in the microbiology lab.
-Use all of the information from this class to assist them in the microbiology clinical mentorship in which the student will perform some of the hands-on tasks that they have learned about.
