The Purdue University Veterinary Technology Distance Learning Program (VT-DLP) is a multimedia delivery curriculum using Web-based instruction as well as other instructional modalities (CD-ROM, video, textbook, paper-based).

VM 205 Small Animal Nursing Clinical Mentorship I

CREDIT:

1.0 hour of Purdue University credit. This course is not available for Continuing Education credit.

VCS 140 Small Animal Nursing and Health Management I
VCS 141 Small Animal Nursing and Health Management II
(may be taken if VCS 141 is taken concurrently)

You will be required to submit video tape of your task performance in order to complete this Clinical Mentorship. Therefore, you will be required to have access to a video camera in order to complete this course

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is the first of 3 Clinical Mentorships in Small Animal Nursing. This Clinical Mentorship will require the student to work with a small animal veterinary care facility to practice several tasks under the supervision of a clinical mentor (veterinarian or accredited Veterinary Technician). This Clinical Mentorship focuses on the principles of history taking, physical examination, simple diagnostic sample collection, parenteral and oral administration of medication, and venipuncture.

In order to achieve the goals for this Clinical Mentorship, the tasks must be performed to the level of competency as outlined by the Criteria outlined in the Criteria Handbook and Log Book for each task. The student is responsible for providing documentation for each task as defined by the Materials Submitted for Evaluation and Verification section on each task. In addition to the documentation, the student will be evaluated by the Clinical Mentorship site supervisor on how well the student met the outlined Criteria for each task. Final approval of successful performance and completion of the Clinical Mentorship will be made by the Purdue University instructor in charge of the Clinical Mentorship based upon the documentation provided by the student.

The Purdue University instructor in charge has the option to require additional documentation if, in their judgment, the student has not performed the task to the level set by the Criteria, or if the documentation does not clearly demonstrate this.

Documentation of completed tasks is essential to validating the educational process and insuring that the performance of graduates of the Veterinary Technology Distance Learning Program meets the standards of quality required by the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine faculty and the American Veterinary Medical Association accrediting bodies.


COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • to perform at an acceptable level of competence the basics of examination, monitoring, and history taking of veterinary patients
  • to perform at an acceptable level of competence the basics of restraint
  • to perform at an acceptable level of competence the basics of topical and parenteral administration of drugs
  • to perform at an acceptable level of competence the basics of basic grooming and patient hygiene procedures
  • to perform at an acceptable level of competence techniques for collecting urine and taking ear swabs for diagnostic procedures

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This Clinical Mentorship focuses on the principles of venipuncture, catheter placement, various methods of urine collection, vaginal cytology, dental prophylaxis and diagnostic ECG tracings. The student is responsible for providing documentation for each task as defined by the Materials Submitted for Evaluation and Verification section on each task.   • urine collection by urinary catheter and cystocentesis
  • the basics of collection and preparation of vaginal cytology
  • techniques for completing enemas, stomach tubing and diagnostic ECG tracings
  • a complete dental prophylaxis

This is the last of 3 Clinical Mentorships in Small Animal Nursing. This Clinical Mentorship will require the student to work with a small animal veterinary care facility to practice several tasks under the supervision of a clinical mentor (veterinarian or credentialed Veterinary Technician). This Clinical Mentorship focuses on the principles oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and emergency care procedures. .

In order to achieve the goals for this Clinical Mentorship, the tasks must be performed to the level of competency as outlined by the Criteria outlined in the Criteria Handbook and Log Book for each task. The student is responsible for providing documentation for each task as defined by the Materials Submitted for Evaluation and Verification section on each task. In addition to the documentation, the student will be evaluated by the Clinical Mentorship site supervisor on how well the student met the outlined Criteria for each task. Final approval of successful performance and completion of the Clinical Mentorship will be made by the Purdue University instructor in charge of the Clinical Mentorship based upon the documentation provided by the student.

The student is responsible for providing documentation for each task as defined by the Materials Submitted for Evaluation and Verification section on each task. ·Handling and Restraint: Bovine:

  • Approaching the cow (front, rear, side give guidelines)
  • Halter placement
  • Using a head catch
  • Restraint of the head
  • Tail tie
  • Application of kicking restraints
  • Application of tail restraint
  • Application of flank restraint


Handling and Restraint: Sheep and Goats:

  • Demonstrate the herding together of sheep and goats
  • Demonstrate the best way to restrain sheep and goats

Handling and Restraint: Pigs

  • Demonstrate how to catch pigs
  • Demonstrate moving pigs with a panel

Additional Large Animal Medicine Tasks

  • Knot tying: square, halter tie, clove hitch, bowline, and tail tie.
  • Blood sample collection from the jugular
  • Blood sample collection from the tail vein of a bovine
  • Demonstrate the proper collection of TPR data for cattle, swine, sheep and goats

This is the Food Animal and Equine Anesthesia Clinical Mentorship. This Clinical Mentorship will require the student to work with a food animal/equine veterinary care facility to practice several tasks under the supervision of a clinical mentor (veterinarian or accredited Veterinary Technician). This Clinical Mentorship focuses on the principles of large animal and equine anesthesia from induction and maintenance to recovery.

In order to achieve the goals for this Clinical Mentorship, the tasks must be performed to the level of competency as outlined by the Criteria listed in the Criteria Handbook and Log Book for each task. The student is responsible for providing documentation for each task as defined by the Materials Submitted for Evaluation and Verification section on each task. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This Clinical Mentorship will require the student to work in a veterinary care facility to practice several tasks under the supervision of a clinical mentor (veterinarian or accredited Veterinary Technician). This Clinical Mentorship focuses on the principles of operating room (OR) procedures, patient and instrument preparation for surgery and the duties of the circulating nurse and the scrub nurse.

In order to achieve the goals for this Clinical Mentorship, the tasks must be performed to the level of competency as outlined by the Criteria listed in the Criteria Handbook and Log Book for each task. The student is responsible for providing documentation for each task as defined by the Materials Submitted for Evaluation and Verification section on each task. In addition to the documentation, the student will be evaluated by the Clinical Mentorship site supervisor on how well the student met the outlined Criteria for each task. Final approval of successful performance and completion of the Clinical Mentorship will be made by the Purdue University instructor in charge of the Clinical Mentorship based upon the documentation provided by the student.

The Purdue University instructor in charge has the option to require additional documentation if, in their judgment, the student has not performed the task to the level set by the Criteria, or if the documentation does not clearly demonstrate this.
