About Our Services

The Small Animal ICU at Purdue University offers 24 hour care to hospitalized patients. It also serves as a triage point for emergency care. The staff of the ICU practice emergency and critical care nursing skills specifically for small animal patients.

We have the capability to offer the following to patients.

  • Oxygen Therapy
  • ECG Monitoring
  • Nebulization
  • Intravenous Fluid Therapy
  • Pain Management
  • Physical Therapy
  • Direct and Indirect Blood Pressure Monitoring
  • Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition
  • Blood and Plasma Trasnfusions

We also have the capabilities to run immediate laboratory tests to check blood gases, hematocrit, total protein, electrolytes, blood glucose, and lactic acid. These tests help the cinicians determine the patients care and allow them to know if more intense therapies should be performed. The Small Animal ICU has recently added a critical care ventilator and advanced monitoring to add patients who are unable to breathe on their own.

The ICU employs10 registered veterinary technicians that care for the hospitalized patients offering individual nursing care and intense monitoring. The technicians administer medications, various therapies and pay special attention to patient comfort.
