College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital Small Animal Surgery About Our Service The orthopedic, neurology, and soft tissue sections in the Small Animal Surgery section offer “state of the art” care for animals undergoing surgery at the Purdue Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Following a referral from your veterinarian, you may schedule an appointment for your animal by calling our reception staff at (765) 494-1107 between 8am and 5pm Monday thru Friday. If you are coming to the VTH for an orthopedic surgical procedure or consultation for your dog or cat, please print out and fill in the appropriate form below and bring with you to your visit. For the initial visit, both a Client History Form plus a Dog or Cat Mobility Form should be completed. For all subsequent visits, only the Dog or Cat Recheck forms need to be completed. It will help expedite your visit. Service hours The orthopedic surgery and neurology section receives cases on Mondays and Wednesdays and performs surgery on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The soft tissue surgery section performs elective surgery on Mondays, receives cases Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and performs surgery daily.

Our neurology services treats patients with medical illness affecting the brain, spinal cord, and nerves and surgical conditions such as disc herniation, spinal fractures, and brain tumors. Our soft tissue surgeons perform abdominal surgery to obtain tissue for biopsy and treat condition of the abdominal organs such as the stomach, liver, intestine, pancreas, bladder, and kidneys. We routinely perform surgery on the skin, head and neck, upper airway, heart, and lungs. Advanced dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures are performed by Dr. Gary Lantz, who is board certified in both small animal surgery and veterinary dentistry. Elective surgery, such as routine ovariohysterectomy, castration, and declaw procedures are performed by senior veterinary medical students under faculty supervision. Many of the above surgeries can be performed with minimally invasive surgery.
