Anesthesiology

The Anesthesia service offers 24 hour a day support to all patients requiring anesthesia and pain management at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.  Besides clinical teaching, our boarded anesthesiologists have special interests including veterinary anesthesia and pain management research, equine anesthetic recovery and anesthesia and pain management with exotic animals.  We have one anesthesia resident (a veterinarian in training to become specialized and boarded in the area of anesthesia and pain management) and interns (veterinarians either early in their career or interested in specializing in a specific area) who directly assist with patient care.  In addition to our great faculty and house officers, we have six registered veterinary technicians, all specialized in anesthesia; one of whom is a nationally accredited veterinary technician anesthetist.

The anesthesia and pain management team will review your pet’s medical records, perform a physical examination and plan a specific anesthetic and pain management plan to meet the needs of your pet.  We provide injectable and/or inhalant general anesthesia, regional anesthesia (example epidurals) and local anesthesia (example peripheral nerve blocks).  We utilize monitoring equipment with ECG, invasive and non-invasive blood pressure, pulse oximetry, capnometry, temperature, oxygen measurement and agent gas detection capabilities.  State of the art anesthesia machines and ventilators are available for both large and small animals.
