Why should I become a Distance Learning mentor?

Students may be seeking sites to perform clinical tasks for documentation. You may ask what the benefits are for you/your clinic if you agree to become a mentorship site. Here are some thoughts that may be helpful to you:

  • To give back to the profession: This is a way for you to repay the profession and honor your own mentors for sharing their experiences with you.
  • To bring fresh perspective and recharge your spirit: Mentorship relationships are a sharing proposition. As a guide, you can become “recharged” mentally and physically by working with someone who wants to learn and who is willing to share information they are learning in school.
  • To help someone who is a veterinary assistant in the practice to become educated, credentialed, and a more valuable employee: This is a way for a practice to communicate your support for an employee who wishes to further their education, advance professionally, and provide better patient care.
  • To identify potential employees: This is an opportunity for you to work with a person who may desire employment. It allows you and the student to determine if they are a good fit for each other.

Regardless of your reasons for participating, you must be aware of and agree to the requirements of mentors so you provide the proper materials, experience, and coaching for the best educational experience.
