DOGS! Course: Principles and Techniques of Behavior Modification Participant Referrals We strongly encourage veterinarians to make use of the knowledge and experience of those who have participated in Purdue University's DOGS! Course: Principles and Techniques of Behavior Modification. Veterinarians should complete a behavior consultation, diagnose the problem, and design a treatment plan for their client. Veterinarians may then refer the client to a DOGS! Course participant for assistance in applying the prescribed behavior modification treatment plan. This way, the technician/trainer can be an effective part of the behavior therapy team. The technician/trainer's responsibility is to assist us with implementing the behavior modification aspects of treatment prescribed by a veterinarian, to help clients in the day-to-day training of problem dogs, and to educate owners about the principles of learning and on training techniques. These individuals have also received extensive training in the principles and techniques of behavior modification and information on running an effective puppy class. Once a client is referred to the technician/trainer, veterinarians should stay in close contact with them to monitor the progress of the case and discuss changes in treatment if needed. We hope that there will be two-way communication between the veterinarian and the technician/trainer throughout the treatment of a problem dog. We also encourage vets to employ participants of the DOGS! course to offer puppy classes and training classes at their facilities and to refer clients to DOGS! course participants for obedience classes. Purdue University cannot assume any responsibility for the actions of the participants of the DOGS! course. However, we welcome any comments on the concept of the course and on your experience using the services of DOGS! Course participants. Participant
