This course provides information on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of behavior problems of dogs and cats, with emphasis on diagnosis and differential diagnosis of behavioral problems, application of behavior modification techniques, and behavioral pharmacology. Topics include problem prevention, behavioral intervention, aggression, anxiety related problems, inappropriate elimination, normal unwanted behavior, client counseling and client interaction, the question of euthanasia for behavioral problems, and companion animal welfare.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Incorporate a behavior program into veterinary practice.
  • Counsel puppy and kitten owners on prevention of behavior problems.
  • Identify animals that are at risk of relinquishment due to behavior.
  • Perform a behavior wellness consult.
  • Recognize behavior problems that underlie physical or medical problems.
  • Work up diagnostically the more common behavior problems in companion animals, and arrive at a list of differential diagnoses.
  • Choose the appropriate behavior modification techniques to treat behavior problems in companion animals, based on an understanding of the mechanisms underlying the behavior problem
  • Choose an appropriate drug and dosing regimen to treat the more common behavior problems in companion animals
  • Interact efficiently and compassionately with owners of patients with a behavior problem, and to discuss the question of behavior-related euthanasia
  • Intelligently discuss welfare topics relating to small animals
  • Understand the roles of the veterinarian and veterinary technician in the treatment of behavior problems
  • Gain knowledge for improving time effectiveness and client compliance through proper technician utilization in the treatment of behavior problems

Who Should Participate:

This course is limited to veterinarians and veterinary technicians accompanying veterinarians. We encourage participation of veterinarian/veterinary technician teams. Registration cost is the same for a veterinarian alone and for a veterinarian/veterinary technician team.
