Pfizer introduces new chemotherapy drug,
Palladia® |
We have received several questions about a new cancer drug for dogs called Palladia®. Palladia® is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeted for treatment of canine recurrent cutaneous grade 2 and 3 mast cell tumors with or without lymph node involvement. Palladia® is reported to work both by killing tumor cells (antineoplastic) and by preventing formation of new blood vessels in tumors (antiangiogenisis). Palladia® is dispensed in pill-form and given orally every other day. the most common side effects reported are diarrhea, decreased or loss of appetitie, lameness, weight loss and blood in the stool. Please visit the link below for further drug information and other related/potential side effects. Pfizer is generously donating Palladia® for use in several dogs with cancer until January of 2010. This financial support does not include the costs associated with evaluation of dogs with cancer and the tests to determine if Palladia® is working against the cancer as well as if the Palladia® causes any side effects. These costs must be paid by the pet owner. It is not yet known if Palladia® will be effective against cancers other than mast cell tumors. If you have a dog with cancer and want to know if Palladia® may be helpful, please make an appointment to have your dog examined and to talk to one of the veterinary oncologists. |
