Additional Information

This test detects the presence of the gene encoding the fimbrial antigen F4, previously known as K88. F4 is an adhesin that allows pathogenic E. coli strains to adhere to intestinal cells and colonize the small intestine. The presence of F4 allows classification of the bacterial isolate as ETEC (Enterotoxigenic E. coli).
