Required Application Materials

The following materials are required for application:

  • Completed online application.
  • Unofficial undergraduate transcripts. Most Purdue PREP Scholars will have a GPA above 3.0; however, a holistic review of all applications will be conducted. If overall or science GPA falls below 3.0, then an explanation should be provided by the applicant in the application essay. If the applicant is selected to join the program, official transcripts will be required.
  • A brief statement (300 words or less) that outlines your career goals and describes what you expect to gain from the Purdue PREP.
  • A brief description (300 words or less) of the applicant's research interests.
  • A brief description (300 words or less) of how the applicant intends to achieve their desired career goals, including plans for application to graduate schools. If applicable, this statement should also include a description of previous research experiences.
  • A diversity statement (300 words or less) that describes how your background and experiences might be reflected in your graduate school career and beyond.
  • The contact information for two to three (three highly recommended) individuals from whom you have requested letters of recommendation. These individuals or referees should be academics or professionals who know you well and are familiar with your career aspirations. For example: the applicant’s undergraduate academic advisor, a research mentor or instructor in a laboratory course, or any other instructor who knows the applicant well. Letters from personal acquaintances and family members are not acceptable.
  • A resume or curriculum vitae (CV). 
  • MCAT and/or GRE scores if available.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Applicants from groups underrepresented in biomedical research are strongly encourage to apply. According to the NIH, individuals who have been found to be underrepresented in biomedically relevant research include:
    • Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups include, but not limited to, African Americans, Hispanic Americans (including Puerto Rico), Native Americans, or natives of the U.S. Pacific Islands (e.g., Hawaii, Guam).
    • Individuals with disabilities (who are defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities)
    • Individuals from economically disadvantaged groups

  • Applicant must have graduated or be in the process of graduating with a baccalaureate degree in a biomedically relevant science, life science, or engineering discipline from an accredited U.S. college or university (no more than 36 months prior to applying to Purdue PREP).
  • Must not be enrolled in any graduate program for the duration of the Purdue PREP’s 12-month period.
  • Applicant must be demonstrably committed to pursuing a PhD in a biomedical research field and must plan to enter a PhD, MD/PhD, or DVM/PhD program in a biomedical field within two years after successful completion of the PREP.
  • There is no cutoff GPA at this time; however applicants must show academic evidence of a commitment to science. Prior research experience will be viewed favorably.
