Student success in Purdue University’s Veterinary Technology Prgram is measured in multiple ways reflecting real-world outcomes, clinical readiness, and flexible pathways designed for working professionals.

Below are several of the key indicators we use to evaluate student success and program effectiveness.

Career Outcomes in Veterinary Settings

Approximately 97% of distance learning graduates and 86% of our on-campus graduates and are employed at a veterinary facility when they graduate from the program.

Many students are already working in the field while completing their education, demonstrating our program’s strong connection to real-world veterinary practice.

Hands-On Clinical Skills That Meet Industry Standards

Students develop and demonstrate mastery of AVMA CVTEA-required clinical skills through hands-on training. They are supported by experienced instructors and clinical professionals who explain what is expected, demonstrate proper techniques, and provide constructive and specific feedback. This support helps every student improve and gain the skills they need to succeed in their career.

Strong Performance on the VTNE

Graduates continue to perform well on the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). Although pass rates can vary from year to year, program performance continues to outperform comparable veterinary technology programs and are well above the national average.

Distance Learning: Designed for Real Life

Our Veterinary Technology Distance Learning Program is structured to support students with work and life commitments. All distance learning courses are offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters, allowing students to adjust their pace, reduce or increase course loads, step away when needed, and return when the time is right.

Positive Student Feedback and Continuous Improvement

Student feedback collected through end-of-course evaluations and graduate exit surveys has been overwhelmingly positive. Recent course redesigns have improved the student experience significantly, resulting in fewer concerns and stronger satisfaction with course delivery and engagement.

Distance Learning Graduation Rates

Graduation rates are one of several required reporting metrics and should be interpreted within the context of a flexible, self-paced program.

Because many distance learning students balance full-time work, family responsibilities, and other life commitments, their progression through the program often differs from that of students in traditional cohort-based programs. Some students take fewer courses each semester, pause their studies for a period of time, and then return when their circumstances allow.

For students who began the program between Fall 2020 and Spring 2023 are as follows. Fall 2020 cohort: 11.3%. Spring 2021 cohort: 23.0%. Summer 2021 cohort: 12.8%. Fall 2021 cohort: 18.5%. Spring 2022 cohort: 29.0%. Summer 2022 cohort: 21.0%. Fall 2022 cohort: 9.6%. Spring 2023 cohort: 1.5%.

The minimum time to complete the program is currently three years, or nine consecutive semesters. However, most students take approximately five years to complete all coursework and clinical requirements, and some take longer. This flexibility is an intentional feature of the program and helps students continue their education while managing professional and personal obligations.

On-Campus Graduation Rates

Students enrolled in the on-campus program typically follow a more traditional academic pathway, progressing through a set curriculum alongside their peers. Because of this structured format, students generally complete coursework within a consistent timeframe, typically four years. However, individual circumstances such as academic challenges, personal responsibilities, or changes in career goals may still impact a student’s progression.

The graduation rate for our on-campus program is 85.6%.

Purdue University’s Veterinary Technology Program is designed to prepare students for success in real-world veterinary settings. Through a combination of flexible learning pathways, rigorous clinical skill development, and a curriculum aligned with industry standards, students gain the knowledge and experience needed to enter and advance in the profession.

Graduates leave the program with demonstrated competency in essential clinical skills, preparation for national licensure, and, in many cases, established employment within veterinary practices.
