Molecular Diagnostics

General Considerations:

The preferred samples size per test is 5 grams or 5 milliliters. Swabs may be appropriate for certain tests. Please refer to individual test pages for specific guidelines.

Samples should be shipped overnight on ice in a clearly labeled, sealed, leak-proof container.

If pooling is requested, please send tissues in separate containers to allow pooling to occur in the laboratory.

To avoid testing delays, please indicate test requests clearly on the submission form. Specifically, indicate what test(s) is/are to be performed on which tissue submitted and whether samples should be tested individually or pooled, when available. Unless otherwise indicated, samples will be tested individually.

Specific Guidelines:

Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease
For specifics on avian sample collection, please read the article from USDA Avian Sample Collection for Influenza A and Newcastle Disease. Please follow these guidelines and submit samples in the appropriate broth. Indicate the sample pooling method used on the submission form.
