Patient-based research – This type of research is conducted with patients or with material collected from and linked to patients. This research may focus on therapeutic interventions, development of new technologies and mechanisms of disease. A variety of experimental designs with different strengths can be used for patient-based studies. The most robust type of patient-based research is a clinical trial.

Epidemiological and behavioral studies – These types of studies examine the distribution of disease, the factors that affect health, and how health-related decisions are made.

Implementation studies – Focus on methods to promote the implementation and uptake of research findings in everyday practice, thus transforming healthcare delivery, improve health outcomes, and manage acute and chronic illness. These patient-centered studies may include research to identify the most effective and most efficient interventions, treatments, and services.
