People

The Pre-Clinical Research Laboratory is staffed by a director, a manager, and animal technicians. Technicians are Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and/or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

Facility

The Pre-Clinical Research Laboratory (PCL) is a CTSI-Indiana core animal research facility housed in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The PCL (approx. 2000 sq ft) consist of two sterile surgery rooms, a clean procedure room, a scrub area, an instrument cleaning area, two induction areas, a multipurpose room, and 4 peri-operative animal housing rooms. Clinical pathology, microbiology, imaging (radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI and scintigraphy) services are available through the Purdue University Veterinary Hospital and the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. Routine housing and animal care is provided in adjacent facilities operated by the Purdue University's Centrally Managed Laboratory Animal Facility.

Equipment

The PCL has basic anesthesia, anesthesia monitoring, and basic surgical equipment. Specialized equipment may be accessed through the Veterinary Hospital.

Facility description for grant applications

All animal experiments will be performed in the Pre-Clinical Laboratory (PCL), a CTSI-Indiana core animal research facility in the College of Veterinary Medicine. All animal experiments will be performed according to the Animal Welfare Act under a protocol to be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee of Purdue University (IACUC). Veterinary care is provided by the Laboratory Animal Program (LAP), headed by a veterinarian certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). The Pre-Clinical Laboratory (approx. 2000 sq ft) consist of two sterile surgery rooms, a clean procedure room, a scrub area, an instrument cleaning area, two induction areas, a multipurpose room, and 4 peri-operative animal housing rooms. Routine housing and animal care will be provided in adjacent facilities operated by the Purdue University's Laboratory Animal Centrally Managed Facility. The PCL has 2 full-time and 1 part-time technician to provide peri-operative animal care and technical support. The University is registered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Registration No. 32-R-0007) as an approved research facility and the animal care areas are inspected at least 1 time a year by the USDA. The University has on file with the Office for Protection from Research Risks of NIH an Assurance of Compliance with Public Health Service regulations and requirements and provisions of the Animal Welfare Act. The institutional assurance number is A3231-01. All facilities are accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).
