Program Summary

The Veterinary Scholars Summer Research Program provides veterinary and undergraduate students interested in veterinary medicine with the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience, explore research-related career paths, and connect with faculty and other research professionals through a mentored summer research project.

Program Benefits

• Explore careers opportunities in clinical, diagnostic, and basic biomedical research.
• Design and conduct a summer research project with guidance from a faculty mentor. (See past mentors and projects)
• Participate in weekly seminars (lunch included) on topics such as:
  • Careers in academia, industry, and government
  • Laboratory animal medicine
  • Research ethics
  • Current research topics 
  • Clinical trials
• Take part in networking and program activities, which include visits to industry partners, opportunities to connect with veterinary students from other institutions, and social events.
• Present research and connect with veterinary scholars from across the country at the Boehringer Ingelheim National Veterinary Scholars Symposium (veterinary students only).

The program is 10 weeks from May 26, 2026 to August 3, 2026 (August 9, 2026 for DVM students).

Salary

Veterinary students earn $6,500 and undergraduate students earn $4,500.
